“Running in Circles” Wins National Short Prose Competition

The Writers’ Union of Canada is pleased to announce that Jo Hatherly has won the $2,500 cash prize for its 25th annual Short Prose Competition for Emerging Writers, for the best story under 2,500 words, with her piece “Running in Circles.”

She was a Short Prose Competition finalist in 2014 with her story “The Canal Duckling” and in 2016 with “The Swimmer.” She is currently working on a book inspired by cottage guestbook entries and the untold stories behind them.

Running in Circles, winner of the 2018 Writers Union of Canada Short Prose Competition: Trapped miles from help, a country vet’s life depends on her dog’s game of fetch.

The Swimmer, one of the top 12 finalists in the Writer’s Union of Canada’s 23rd national short prose competition. Two women jockey for a coveted lane at the community swimming pool.

The Canal Duckling, 2014 WUC finalist where a nanny races along a city canal to rescue a duckling separated from its mother, unaware she has let go of the hand of the little girl in her care.
